Scott Pilgrim vs. the World

"Bread Makes You Fat" is a line that frequently appears in the Scott Pilgrim franchise. Despite first appearing in Volume 2 of the original graphic novels, the line was popularized in the film adaptation, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.

Usage in Scott Pilgrim media[]

Volume 2[]

The line made it's debut in Volume 2 of the comics. Scott invited Ramona for dinner at his and Wallace's apartment. She asked what they would be eating, which he said was a "baked pasta dish with asparagus a lemony taste and a little too much cheese", that he made himself. He also made some garlic bread. After eating, Ramona complimented the meal and his decision to make some garlic bread. He told her that it was his favorite food and that he could eat it for every meal or for every day until he died. Ramona told him that he would get fat, which he denied. When he asked why, she told him "Bread makes you fat. Butter makes you fat". Scott, who didn't know this, replied with "Bread makes you fat??".

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World[]

The line was popularized in the movie adaptation. In a scene pretty much mirroring the original, Ramona is invited to Scott's apartment for dinner. Wallace left for the Casa Loma, but Scott, freaking out, told him not to leave. Wallace insisted that he "man the hell up" and if he was lucky, he could get to 2-and-a-half base tonight, before he left. Fifteen minutes later, they were eating dinner. Ramona complimented the garlic bread, so Scott explained how it was his favorite food to eat and how he could eat it without stopping. Ramona warned that he would get fat, which he denied and asked why. She told him that "Bread makes you fat". Scott, shocked, replied "Bread makes you fat??".

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off[]

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off marked the first time in which the line was not spoken by Ramona. Knives and Stephen pitched a play to Matthew Patel and were tasked with writing songs for it. They tried out several bread related verses, including "Bread makes you think" and "Bread makes you full", but they found both lines to be either to vague or too obvious. They continued, eventually coming up with "Bread ain't all that/Bread makes you fat". They both realized that this verse was perfect and screamed "Holy crap!" in response.

Outside of Scott Pilgrim media[]

Seconds[]

The line appeared (along with several other Scott Pilgrim cameos) in Bryan Lee O'Malley's other graphic novel, Seconds. Hazel explains how Katie can keep a house spirit like Lis happy. The first three steps include sweeping the hearth, feeding some firewood into it and laying down some clothing items. The fourth step is to leave bread on the rafters above. Hazel tells always to use fresh bread and never use day-olds. She tells him that her friend, Patrick, saves bread for her, but begs Katie not to tell him what she does with them. Katie is wowed that Hazel just feeds Lis bread every day. Hazel is concerned, so Katie asks her if Lis could get fat. Hazel responds with "Wait... bread makes you fat?".

Trivia[]

  • The line has since spiraled into an Internet meme.
  • Most people don't recognize that Ramona also adds "Butter makes you fat". The reason was that the line was popularized in the movie, but she doesn't mention "butter", instead just telling Scott how bread makes him fat, followed by his shocked reaction.
