"Scott Pilgrim Is Dating A High-Schooler!" is a running gag featured throughout the Scott Pilgrim series.
History[]
The gag is mainly used as a means for Scott Pilgrim's friends to criticize him for dating Knives Chau, mainly due to the six-year age gap (Knives at 17 and Scott at 23). The line serves as the opening line of the series and is also Kim's first line.
Times the gag has been used or referenced:[]
- Kim outright blurts it out to Stephen and Young Neil.
- Wallace jokingly asks "is he cute?"
- Stacey calls Scott and yells to him about it. Additionally, in the movie, she also calls him a "scandal".
- Wallace tells Scott if he were in his position, he would think twice about dating a high-schooler.
- Scott refuses to refer to it as "dating", and Wallace mockingly tells him it's more like "playtime".
- Wallace tells Knives that she is too good for Scott. Julie would later say the same about Ramona to Scott.
- Stephen tells Julie all about it, declaring that his mourning period over his break-up with Envy Adams was officially over. In the movie, Julie tells Stephen that Scott dating Knives is the mourning period.
- Ramona asked how old Knives was. Scott tried to think up a response, coming up with "I gotta pee on her [Knives]", before correcting himself and running off to the bathroom.
- Knives' infobox in the anime said "Fun fact: She is dating Scott! (more on that later)"
- Gideon learns about it from his security feed and told Matthew Patel. When Gideon told Matthew that Ramona didn't know about it yet, Matthew mocked Scott, claiming "And I thought we were evil!"
- Lucas poked fun at Ramona for searching for someone who was dating a high-schooler. Ramona alerted him to reports of his own actions of dating the Knives Chau actress, with the media labelling it in the same way.
- Scott later referenced it in his apology to Knives, telling her that "apparently, a 23-year old dating a high-schooler is frowned upon by society."
