Censoring is a power mainly used by Julie Powers and Envy Adams in the Scott Pilgrim franchise.
History[]
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World[]
In Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Julie is seen censoring when confronting Scott in Second Cup. There, he asks her how she is "doing that with her mouth", to which Julie dismisses by saying "Never ββββing mind how I'm doing it!". Julie then censors again after serving Scott.
Julie swears at Scott again after she tells him and his friends that Envy Adams would like to meet them backstage. After Scott questions if she is serious, Julie responds by saying "Did I ββββ stutter?"
Envy Adams also was seen censoring after Julie told her that she was "so pissed off" for her to which Envy responded "Shut the ββββ up Julie."
Scott Pilgrim vs. the Animation[]
In Scott Pilgrim vs. the Animation, Scott is seen censoring when Kim is kidnapped by the Benvie Boys and then later when Scott is fighting with them. A censor bar appears when he says "Simon, I'm here, don't be a ββββ".
Scott Pilgrim Takes Off[]
In the third episode of Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, "Ramona Rents a Video", Julie is seen censoring when Ramona tells her that Scott is alive after he is presumed dead after his battle with Matthew Patel.
Stacey Pilgrim is also heard censoring when Julie tells her "not to swear at the ββββ customers"
When a customer interrupted Julie during her meeting with Ramona to tell her that he asked for an iced Americano instead of a hot one, Julie shouts at him and tells him to add ice before saying "You stupid ββββck" after returning to her conversation with Ramona.
Roxie Richter is seen censoring when she battles Ramona in No-Account Video.
Envy swears while talking to Todd about how he's known Wallace "for 3 ββββing days".
Julie swears again when she returns to her house which is cluttered and turned into a mess by Lucas Lee and Gideon Graves. She proclaims that she "was gone for 90 ββββing minutes".
When Scott is admiring his honeymoon, Future Scott Pilgrim replies with "Yeah, I met Optimus Prime. Optimus ββββing Prime."
Julie later swears again at Even Older Scott Pilgrim after he attacks Gideon.
The Censor is the last piece of dialogue featured in the series when Julie responds to Gideon planning revenge by saying "the Goose is loose, honk honk ββββers"
Other uses[]
In Entertainment Weekly Reunions Presents Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, a censor bar is used by Aubrey Plaza in her read-through for Julie. Plaza used a piece of duct tape attached to a popsicle stick to reenact her portrayal of Julie.
Later on, when Anna Kendrick recreates Envy's "Shut the ββββ up Julie." quote, she quickly covers her mouth to mimic a censor bar, Kendrick even stated that she would've brought a prop with her.
Trivia[]
- The censor bleep sound used in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is based off the start-up sound of the ZX Spectrum, a home computer manufactured in the 1980s which the film's director Edgar Wright was a huge fan of.
- In Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, the censor bleep sound used is just a default bleeping noise.
- Bryan Lee O'Malley revealed that Scott Pilgrim Takes Off had to have a TV-MA rating due to Julie Powers' swearing and subsequent censoring in the show.
- Although censoring is used, the censor bar is not seen in Scott Pilgrim Takes Off.
- To avoid an R-Rating in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, the word "f**k", said by Envy to Julie, had to be bleeped out because Scott Pilgrim calls Todd Ingram a "cocky-cock" earlier in the film.
