When Scott defeats the many enemies that he has to face (mainly members of the League of Ramona's Evil Ex-Boyfriends), they often leave behind a pile of coins and sometimes an item for Scott Pilgrim. This is a reference to many different video games.
What Scott does with these rewards is never specified. In fact, from Lucas Lee onwards, Scott is never seen picking up the coins he wins in battle.

In The Game[]
A cheat in the Game (Up, Up, Down, Down, Up, Up, Up, Up) allows coin sprites to turn into animal sprites when defeating an enemy. This is an obvious reference to the Sonic the Hedgehog games.
Trivia[]
- The coins in the Movie and the game (pixelized) were in fact real Canadian Dollars. Actor Mark Webber (who portrays Stephen Stills) stated in his commentary that he had pocketed $24 from the Chaos Theatre scene after Gideon's defeat.
- The cheat code that transforms coins into animals in the game has the same button combination as the cheat code for Sonic 3 Scott asked Wallace about in Volume 2.
- Edgar Wrong is seen to spontaneously explode into coins in Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, but he can be seen alive and well in the season finale.
