The Disappearance of Scott Pilgrim occurred in 2004 when Scott Pilgrim vanished and Ramona Flowers conducted an investigation into finding him. After a period of time, Scott reappeared on the doorstep of Ramona Flowers' apartment in Toronto, Canada. It serves as the main storyline of Scott Pilgrim Takes Off.
History[]
Before the disappearance[]
Main article: Battle at Club Rockit (alternate reality)
When Scott Pilgrim started to date Ramona Flowers, he invited her to his band's show at Club Rockit. Whilst in attendance, Ramona witnessed Scott confront her first evil ex-boyfriend, Matthew Patel. After they prepared to fight one another, Scott vanished without a trace, convincing everyone that he had died. After the events at the Rockit, a funeral was hosted for Scott.
The investigation commences[]
Following the funeral, and after hearing Scott's voice in his Subspace highway, Ramona woke up convinced that Scott was still alive. She went to the Rockit, bribed a guard to view the security footage from the night Scott disappeared, and discovered that just before Matthew Patel could punch Scott, someone opened a vegan portal and pulled him in, leaving $2.10 to fake his death. Ramona then went to the Second Cup to explain her findings to Julie Powers, who was upset that Scott wasn't actually dead. Despite Julie's suggestion that it wasn't her responsibility since she had only dated Scott once, Ramona was determined to find him, emphasizing the quality of their date.
Ramona asked Julie for a list of major players in Scott's life who could have kidnapped him. Julie ruled out her own ex, Stephen Stills, due to his anxiety, and then mentioned Young Neil, whose idiocy, she claimed, made even Scott look like a genius. Julie also suggested Envy Adams, citing her bad breakup with Scott, though Ramona, having seen Envy at Scott's funeral, doubted this possibility. The conversation made Ramona question which of Scott's exes knew him the longest and could potentially be behind his disappearance.
Julie then had an idea that made Ramona question, the only ex to have known Scott the longest.
Questioning Kim[]
Ramona goes to No-Account Video to question Scott's ex, Kim Pine. Kim shows her the store's "Wall of Shame," revealing that Scott owes $3,500 in late fees. Kim suggests Scott might have faked his death to avoid paying back the fees. Ramona informs Kim that Scott is indeed alive. Kim recalls Young Neil saying "the house always wins" at Scott's funeral.
Ramona explains Subspace and how she uses it to deliver packages for Netflix. Kim notes this could put video stores like No-Account Video out of business. Ramona asks about Kim's history with Scott. Kim recounts a high school geography project where Scott struggled to draw a map but confidently drew a terrible sheep instead. Ramona finds this unromantic, prompting Kim to share a more romantic memory: Scott saving her from Simon Lee and his gang of teenage jerks. Their relationship ended when Scott moved to Toronto. Ramona comments that Scott must be a lovable idiot, and Kim realizes Ramona likes Scott. Ramona admits there were sparks, and Kim warns her of trouble ahead. Ramona laments her luck with exes, and Kim suggests questioning her evil exes, as they might have kidnapped Scott.
Just then, Roxie Richter arrives. Ramona introduces her as her fourth evil ex and college roommate "and more." Roxie declares herself as "Roxie Richter! Ramona's fourth evil Ex!" and claims the League has been in ruins since Matthew Patel defeated Gideon Graves. Roxie wants to win Ramona's heart back, boasting about her emotional intelligence. Ramona retorts that Roxie is just like the others when it comes to feelings. Roxie accuses Ramona of being impossible to talk to, leading to a fight.
Battling Roxie[]
Main article: Duel at No-Account Video
Roxie charges at Ramona with her sword, and Ramona narrowly dodges, knocking over DVDs. Roxie leaps at her, but Ramona dodges again and hits her with a large hammer, sending her across the store. Roxie jumps onto Ramona, causing her to stagger. Roxie eventually pins her down and lunges, but Ramona kicks her into a shelf, which falls on them.
Ramona wakes up in a black-and-white movie, with Roxie charging at her. Their weapons lock, transporting them to an old Japanese movie setting. Hollie tells Kim that Roxie and Ramona are ruining her movie and takes a break. Roxie and Ramona continue fighting, with Roxie kicking Ramona down stairs and attacking her. Kim pauses and rewinds the movie, annoying Roxie. Ramona sends Roxie through different movie settings until they return to the video store. Roxie grabs the remote from Kim and destroys it.
Ramona pulls Roxie into an Old Western, and they end up on a train. Ramona refuses to fight, prompting Roxie to accuse her of running away again. Ramona recalls their college years together and the good times they shared. Roxie charges at Ramona, and they fight with their fists. They end up on a crashing plane, where Ramona apologizes for leaving Roxie without saying goodbye. Roxie confesses that it made her feel worthless and just wanted Ramona to notice her. Ramona tearfully apologizes again, and Roxie accepts but decides not to let Ramona win the fight. Before Roxie can attack, the plane is shot down, and they are sucked out of the cargo hold, holding hands as they fall, eventually landing back at the video store.
Investigation at Torontowood Studios[]
Main article: Investigation at Torontowood Studios
Ramona visits the Torontowood movie studio and finds herself on the set of a film that replicates the Rockit. She meets Young Neil, who reveals that Edgar Wrong, the director, prefers using sets over real locations for authenticity. Ramona doubts Neil’s involvement in writing the script and soon encounters Envy Adams, who is portraying her in the movie. The set is chaotic, with actors confused by their roles and relationships. Neil takes Ramona to Lucas Lee's trailer, where she learns that he is cast as Scott Pilgrim and is clueless about the film's plot, thinking it isn't a biopic. Ramona then meets Wallace, whose actor is straight, leading to a confrontation that results in Wallace taking over his role after impressing Edgar Wrong with his genuine portrayal.
As Ramona delves deeper, she learns that Lucas Lee isn't responsible for Scott Pilgrim's disappearance. Lucas' scandal with the actress playing Knives Chau causes chaos on set, culminating in a dramatic fight with paparazzi ninjas. Ramona helps Lucas hide in her Subspace Suitcase, where he reveals his alibi and denies any involvement in Scott's kidnapping. After clearing Lucas, Ramona continues her investigation, which leads her to Todd Ingram, whose relationship with Envy Adams and newfound feelings for Wallace Wells complicate matters. Todd’s emotional breakdown and Envy's subsequent outburst create further turmoil, but Ramona seizes the opportunity to question them about Scott. Todd and Envy ultimately provide an alibi, and Ramona is forced to cross them off her list of suspects.
Ramona's investigation takes a turn when Matthew Patel arrives and immediately disrupts the film production. Patel, who now owns G-Man Media and the League of Ramona's Evil Exes, reveals he has defeated Gideon Graves and taken over his assets. Ramona learns about Patel’s plans and his disdain for the film's portrayal of his character. With Todd and Envy no longer suspects, Ramona sets her sights on Gideon and Julie Powers, adding them to her list.
Investigating Julie and Gideon[]
Main article: Investigation of Julie Powers and Gideon Graves
After receiving a tip from Matthew Patel, Ramona went to Julie's house to inquire about Scott's disappearance, discovering that Gideon, Ramona's evil ex, was living with Julie. Ramona questioned Julie about Gideon's real identity, learning that Gideon, born "Gordon Goose," had a troubled high school past. Julie explained that Gideon, once the school's biggest geek, was mocked after being rejected by a popular girl. Ramona shared her negative experiences with Gideon, but Julie noted that Gideon had softened since living with her. Ramona suspected Gideon might have kidnapped Scott and asked if Julie was involved, but Julie denied it and suggested removing Gideon from the suspect list.
After picking up groceries, Ramona and Julie returned to Julie's house, finding it wrecked by Lucas Lee and Gideon. Julie confronted them, but Ramona intervened, telling Lucas to find another place to live and advising Gideon to treat Julie better. Before leaving, Ramona inquired about Robot-01, which Lucas revealed was built by the Katayanagi twins. With this new information, Ramona exited through subspace, continuing her search for Scott.
Cracking the case[]
Ramona arrives back at her apartment, where she meets with Kim, Knives, Stephen, and Neil, who have crucial information for her investigation into Scott's disappearance. She updates them on her findings: she has identified the "who" (having questioned five exes: Matthew, Lucas, Todd, Roxie, and Gideon, leaving only Kyle and Ken), the "why" (the twins' motivation stemming from Ramona dating them both simultaneously in college), and the "how" (Robot-01 created the vegan portal since it technically cannot eat). Ramona confirms this by playing the tape from the Rockit. To determine the "where," she plans to confront the Twins.
Knives then reveals additional information: Young Neil did not write the script; data shows it was written fourteen years in the future. Suddenly, Scott Pilgrim appears at the door, confirming that while the Twins and Robot-01 were involved, he was the mastermind behind the plot. With this revelation, Knives faints again.
Aftermath[]
Main article: Scott Pilgrim's Precious Little Musical and Battle at the Dream Desert
Following Scott's return to the past, Even Older Scott Pilgrim teleports Scott, his friends, and the Evil Exes away from the opening performance of Scott Pilgrim's Precious Little Musical to the Dream Desert. There, Even Older Scott belittles his younger self for continuing to date Ramona and vows to destroy all of Scott's friends and the Evil Exes. As the battle ensues, Ramona wields her Big Hammer, Scott physically attacks his older self, and Knives fights with her blades until Even Older Scott punches the highlights out of her hair. The Evil Exes use weapons from Ramona's bag, fighting with their powers, until everyone except Scott and Ramona is teleported back to the theatre, leaving Wallace confused.
In the Dream Desert, Scott is punched to the ground and Ramona expresses doubts about dating him, given Even Older Scott's perspective. The battle halts when Even Older Ramona confronts Even Older Scott for not contacting her in ten years. She then fuses with Ramona to form Super Ramona, who sends Even Older Scott back to the room where he trained for a decade. This ends the battle, returning Scott and Ramona to the theatre just as the musical concludes.
