Hair dye is a recurring item of the Scott Pilgrim franchise, serving as one of the many quirks of Ramona Flowers and, in some way, Knives Chau.
Use[]
As one of her many character traits, Ramona Flowers constantly changes her hair colour. Ramona has dyed it so many times that she herself doesn't remember it's natural color. In the comics and movie, her dye is very basic, using only one colour for her hair, such as her classic pink in Volume 1 and her classic blue in the second act of the movie. But in the anime, she wears at least two colors, e.g., wearing pink and purple when she meets Scott at the party and wearing dark green and light green at Torontowood Studios, during her investigation. She is only ever seen with the dye on her hair, meaning her dyeing process remains unseen in the comics. Ramona's history of dyeing her own hair dates back to the seventh grade. Years in to the future, Ramona still wears hair dye.
The anime revealed a step by step process on how Ramona applies dye. First, she gets into the shower and washes out her current colours. After that, she pours the colours for next style into a bowl, which she mixes. She applies the mixture using a brush, running it under the tap water to help it set in. Finally, she dries it off with a towel.
Famously, in Volume 2 and the movie, Knives Chau buys some dye from Chopper's Drug Mart (or in the movie, Drug Smart) in an attempt to copy Ramona's hipster style and win back Scott Pilgrim. Her most well-known colour within the fanbase is her trademark red streak, used in Volumes 2 and 3, the game, and the anime. The red streak was changed to blue in the movie, most likely because that was Ramona's current color, even though she wore pink dye when Knives dyed her own hair red. In another famous scene, Knives quickly loses the dye after Lynette Guycott punches it out of her hair (done by Todd Ingram in the movie and Even Older Scott Pilgrim in the anime).
Trivia[]
- With all the hair dye she applies, how Ramona's hair is still soft and not damaged remains unclear, even in the future.
- Ramona changing her hair dye was based of Bryan Lee O'Malley himself, as he's stated that he used to dye his hair a lot when he was younger.
