Scott W. Pilgrim (born September 27, 1981) is the 24-year-old protagonist and the main character of the comic series. He is the bass player for the band Sex Bob-omb with his friends Stephen Stills and Kim Pine. Though initially an unemployed slacker, he later gets a job as a dish washer (and food prep trainee) at The Happy Avocado vegetarian restaurant. The character's name was inspired by the song "Scott Pilgrim" from Plumtree's 1998 album Predicts the Future. He believes that smoking is evil, and claims not to drink, though flashbacks show him drunk and he later begins drinking socially. The series also references a mysterious "dark side" of Scott's personality which he avoids as much as possible. He is initially devastated by his break up with Envy Adams whom he dated through college, and begins dating Knives Chau before meeting Ramona Flowers. Also, it is revealed that he dated Kim Pine back in high school as well as having mutual attractions for Lisa Miller. He first meets Ramona in his dreams, later revealed that one of her subspace routes goes through his mind and then at one of Julie's parties. He orders some CDs in order to confront her. After the initial awkwardness of the situation, they form a relationship. The two begin dating, but Scott is plagued by Ramona's elusive past and her "7 evil exes" led by the mysterious "Gideon", all of whom challenge him in succession for the right to date her. It appears that his relationship with Ramona is his most serious, having gained the Power of Love after admitting he is in love with her.

Character Development

First introduced in the first book, Scott Pilgrim's Precious Little Life, he is noted as being lazy, and not even having a job for the first three books (Although he got to work at a Mexican Restaurant for one week before the place closed down). Scott's hobby is playing video games, very much influenced by the creator, Bryan Lee O'Malley, adoring the hobby. He is the bassist for Sex Bob-Omb, and has a red and white Rickenbacker 4003FL bass guitar. He is much more enthusiastic about it than the other band members. Like his girlfriend Ramona, he has had his share of problems from the many other relationships he had and left behind. Hesitating to break up with Knives in Book 2, after hanging out with Ramona, he failed to realize that he had cheated on them both for that brief time before he finally made the break-up official. This one mistake came back to bite him in full force in Book 5, when Ramona hears this from Knives and eventually Scott himself, causing a rift in their relationship. Scott undergoes major changes in the final book when he confronts himself via Negascott and realizes that throughout his life he hasn't been a "paragon of virtue" as Envy puts it, and that he too is flawed, can be a massive dick, and has his own issues which he inevitably must confront.

Scott's Evil Exes

Despite the main premise of the series being Scott's quest to defeat Ramona Flowers seven evil exes and balancing it with his own day-to-day life, Scott has racked up his own "Evil Exes." The first is Knives Chau, the 17 year old whom he dumped for Ramona. Despite Knives occasional interference which helps Scott since all she wants is for him to be happy, she has attacked Ramona twice and Knives' father has gone after Scott as well. The other is Envy Adams, lead vocals for Clash at the Demonhead, former bandmate in university, and former girlfriend. Envy arrives dating Ramona's third evil ex, Todd Ingram, the bass player for their group. Despite Todd being the evil ex and it could easily be argued that overcoming Envy is a greater challenge for Scott. Kim Pine and Lisa Miller can be considered some of his 'evil' exes. However, Kim Pine still holds strong feelings for him, but mainly she shows her annoyance at his occasional ineptitude. Although Lisa and Scott never got in a relationship, they held mutual attractions in high school and Lisa caused the most trouble with the relationship between Scott and Ramona. At the end of Book 6, the antagonistic nature of his relationship with Envy ended with positive closure after he defeated Gideon and Envy saw the truth of the relationships she had recently had.

Micheal Cera as Scott Pilgrim in the film adaptation

Michael Cera plays Scott Pilgrim, formerly starring in 'Superbad', 'Juno', 'Youth in Revolt', 'Year One', 'Nick and Norah's Inifinite Playlist', and 'Arrested Development.'

In a way to get some publicity for the film, Scott's Rickenbacker 4003 bass, clothes and a t-shirt that says "We are Sex Bob-omb!" and the quotation marks t-shirt that Scott wears sometimes were released as avatar items on the X-Box live Avatar Marketplace.

In Scott's battle with the Katayanagi Twins his bass is not destroyed, but it was badly beat up after the fight with Todd Ingram. Scott had to fix it with duct tape (because Scott knew he couldn't beat Todd with his vegan powers so he challenged him to a bass battle.) After that, Gideon offers to be the band's sponsor, but Scott doesn't want to play for Gideon and quits. Young Neil steals Scott's Bass but ends up geting a black Rickenbacker 4003 Bass (exactly the same type of bass.)

In the movie Scott's Brain is shown as a gauge or a wheel with responses (In this case excuses) to say on it. At one point Ramona asks about Knives and the wheel in Scott's head gets stuck between "I have to pee" and "Who her?" to which he says "I have to pee on her." Ramona quickly shoots him a look and asks "What?" to which he replies "Nothing I have to go."

After the battle against the twins, he caught up with Ramona and tried to say the loves her. Instead, he blurted out "I'm in lesbians with you!". After losing her and his band to Gideon, he went back to the apartment to lament over his screw-up. Wallace tried to tell him that "this fight is over", but after overhearing Scott's phone conversation with Gideon, he instead tells Scott to "finish him".

After being asked why he's fighting for Ramona, Scott responds that he's in love with her, earning him the "Power of Love" sword. After a heated battle with Gideon's henchmen, he loses his sword during the clash. Knives swooped in to prevent Gideon from finishing off Scott, right before she focused on a captive Ramona. As Scott tries to break up the fight (and said that he cheated on Knives with Ramona), Gideon manages to stab him in the back, killing him.

Within the Subspace, Ramona tells Scott that she shouldn't be the one he should be fighting for. After, being revived by the Extra Life he earned earlier, he returns to the Chaos Theatre, this time declaring to fight for himself, earning him a more powerful sword, Power of Self-Respect. Finding some resolve amongst both Ramona and Knives, all three took part in fighting and defeating Gideon.

In vs. The World: The Game

Scott's ending in the game is much different than the movie and the books. After Gideon's defeat, Ramona leaves Scott. Sometime later, he begins to have a relationship among all three of his ex-girlfriends (Envy, Kim, and Knives). It is uncertain if he is truly happy...
