Sparks are an element used in the Scott Pilgrim franchise, used to imply romantic feelings between two people who will fall in love eventually.
Scott Pilgrim Takes Off[]
Sparks only appear in Scott Pilgrim Takes Off.
In the first episode, Scott's growing attraction to Ramona results in him asking her out on a date. Whilst at Hillcrest Park, a snowstorm forces them back to Ramona's Apartment. After making him some tea, she took notice of his cold condition and went to get him a blanket. Before she brought back a blanket, she decided to change, only for Scott to accidentally stumble in on her. She told him off politely, but she kept him warm with a hug. He hugged her back. They pulled away for a moment and looked into each others eyes. Their escalating feelings, resulted in the pair sharing a hot, passionate kiss. As they broke away, sparks appeared. They both took notice of this.
It's also possible for neither person in the relationship to feel sparks: in the third episode, Roxie and Kim shared a kiss. When their lips awkwardly met, no sparks are seen. They reflect on this, but Kim decides that Roxie can still be her friend.
Episode 5 implies that sparks may also be one-sided. In the adaptation of Scott Pilgrim's Precious Little Life, Todd and Envy kept making out during takes for Scene 43. Edgar Wrong, the director, was annoyed by this, so Wallace suggests they change the scene for a dumber version. When the next take commences, Todd and Wallace kiss, igniting sparks. However, when Todd's growing relationship results in a breakup with Envy, Wallace reveals that he does not care for Todd, because it was strictly an onset fling. Todd tells him about the sparks, but Wallace tells him that he did not see any.
In the final episode, Wallace sees that sparks are real after all, after he kisses Mobile.
