X-Men is a superhero team from Marvel Comics, created by writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby.
First appearing in X-Men #1 in 1963, the team features mutants, individuals born with superhuman abilities. Over the decades, X-Men has grown into a significant part of Marvel's superhero franchise, encompassing comics, animated series, films, and more.
The Scott Pilgrim franchise has several references of the X-Men.
X-Men references in Scott Pilgrim[]
- Scott Pilgrim's navy parka has the X-Men patch on the left hand side which is presumably sewn on by Scott himself.
- In Volume 1 and Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, Ramona Flowers asks him what's with the X, with Scott responding by saying "Well one of us went to Professor Xaiver's School for Gifted Youngsters, and one of us didn't". Ramona also asks this in the anime but afterwards asks if it is a Sonic-thing, in reference to Sonic the Hedgehog.
- In Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Scott rips the X-Men patch off his parka after he gets stressed in fighting Ramona's exes, moments before first confronting Roxie Richter.
- Todd Ingram, one of Ramona's evil exes, has psychic powers that are a direct nod to the mutant abilities in X-Men.
- Additionally, Todd's vegan powers parody the superpowers theme common in the X-Men universe.
- Gideon Graves, the main antagonist, resembles an evil version of Professor X, the leader of the X-Men, both being masterminds and having a connection to the protagonist's love interest's past.
- The title font for the The Uncanny Comeau is similar to the font for the X-Men comics.
- In two scenes in Volume 5, Scott recounts two X-Men adventures to Ramona.
- Even Older Ramona's jacket resembles Gambit's jacket, especially the collar.
